All optical modes in single-mode fiber

Single-mode fibers support only a single guided mode per polarization (LP01), with additional cladding modes that are not confined to the core.Fundamental Guided Mode

Single-mode fibers (SMFs) are designed to allow only the fundamental transverse mode, LP01, to propagate within the fiber core for a given wavelength . This mode has a Gaussian-like intensity profile concentrated in the core, and its electromagnetic fields are primarily transverse to the fiber axis. The LP01 mode ensures minimal intermodal dispersion, which is critical for long-distance, high-speed optical communication . Each polarization of the LP01 mode can be considered separately, effectively giving two orthogonal polarization states for the same spatial mode.

Absence of Higher-Order Core Modes

Unlike multimode fibers, SMFs do not support higher-order core modes such as LP11, LP21, or LP02 under normal operating conditions . These higher-order modes would require a larger core or shorter wavelength to propagate. The V-number (normalized frequency) of the fiber determines whether only the fundamental mode is guided; for single-mode operation, the V-number must be below the cutoff for the first higher-order mode.

Cladding Modes

Although SMFs guide only the LP01 mode in the core, they also support cladding modes, which are light waves that propagate primarily in the cladding rather than the core . These modes are generally highly lossy and do not contribute to efficient signal transmission. Cladding modes can be excited unintentionally during fiber splicing or bending but typically decay rapidly due to scattering and absorption at the cladding boundary.

Polarization and Special Modes

The fundamental LP01 mode can exist in two orthogonal polarization states, which can be affected by fiber birefringence. In specialized fibers, such as large mode area fibers or photonic crystal fibers, additional modes or orbital angular momentum modes may exist, but in standard SMFs, only the LP01 mode per polarization is practically guided .

Summary
  • Guided core mode: LP01 (fundamental mode)
  • Polarization states: Two orthogonal polarizations of LP01
  • Higher-order core modes: Not supported in standard SMFs
  • Cladding modes: Present but lossy and not used for signal transmission This mode structure is what allows single-mode fibers to achieve low dispersion, high bandwidth, and long-distance transmission in optical communication systems .
