Using a light pen to test fiber optic cold connectors

A fiber optic red light pen or visual fault locator (VFL) can be used to check connectivity and locate faults in cold fiber optic connectors by emitting visible red light through the fiber.

How It Works

A fiber optic red light pen emits a 650nm red laser that travels through the fiber, allowing you to visually confirm continuity and detect breaks, bends, or faulty connections in the cable or connector. Cold connectors, which are pre-terminated and not actively transmitting data, can be tested by connecting the VFL to one end and observing the light at the opposite end.

Step-by-

Step Procedure

Prepare the Fiber: Ensure the fiber ends are clean and free of dust or debris. Use fiber cleaning tools and inspect the connector endfaces under a microscope if available.

Connect the VF

L: Insert the fiber into the red light pen or VFL interface. Most pens have a constant light mode for continuous illumination and a flashing mode to help locate faults quickly. Observe the Output: Look at the opposite end of the fiber.

If red light is visible, the fiber is continuous. If the light is dim, intermittent, or absent, there may be a break, bend, or poor connection. Trace Faults: For longer cables or patch panels, the VFL can help identify the exact location of a fault by showing light leakage through the fiber jacket at the problem point.

Document Results: Record the connectivity status and any faults found for maintenance or installation verification purposes.

Safety Considerations

Never look directly into the fiber end when the VFL is active, as the laser can damage your eyes. Remove batteries from the pen if it will not be used for an extended period to prevent leakage and damage. Use only fiber-specific cleaning tools and avoid metal dust or debris near the connectors to prevent damage.

Advantages

Quick and simple method for basic continuity testing. Helps locate faults in cold connectors, patch panels, and splices. Can be used alongside other testing methods like power meters or OTDRs for more detailed loss measurements.

Using a light pen is an effective first step in verifying fiber optic cold connectors before performing more precise insertion loss or end-to-end testing.
