Bhutan Charging Station Distribution Box

Bhutan currently has 75 EV charging stations, unevenly distributed across dzongkhags, with plans to expand coverage to one station per 15 EVs by 2030.

Current Distribution

Bhutan has 75 EV charging stations, of which 32 are AC and 43 are DC. However, four stations are non-operational, and nearly 40 of the functional stations are concentrated in Thimphu, Paro, and Phuentsholing, leaving several dzongkhags without any stations. This uneven distribution poses challenges for EV users, particularly along highways and in district towns, where drivers may face long waits or risk running out of battery.

Government Oversight and Management

The Bhutan Power Corporation (BPC) is responsible for the construction, maintenance, and ownership of all EV charging stations. Coordination among the Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport (MoIT), Ministry of Finance (MoF), and Ministry of Energy and Natural Resources (MoENR) ensures infrastructure gaps are addressed, with MoF providing budgetary support. The government aims to expand the network significantly, targeting one charging station for every 15 EVs by 2030, ensuring more equitable distribution across all dzongkhags.

Technical and User Considerations

Studies indicate that EV users in Bhutan face limited driving range, battery degradation, and insufficient charging availability, which affect overall satisfaction. Performance analysis at stations, such as in Samdrup Jongkhar, highlights the importance of power quality and grid stability when adding new distribution boxes and stations. Proper placement of distribution boxes is critical to ensure reliable access, minimize downtime, and integrate renewable energy sources for sustainable operation.

Future Plans

The government's strategy includes: Expanding station coverage to underserved dzongkhagsEnsuring operational reliability through regular maintenanceIntegrating renewable energy to support sustainable EV chargingOptimizing station placement to reduce wait times and improve accessibility This approach aligns with Bhutan's broader goal of promoting clean transportation, reducing carbon emissions, and achieving 70% EV adoption by 2035. In summary, while Bhutan's EV charging infrastructure is currently concentrated in a few regions, planned expansion and strategic distribution of charging station boxes aim to provide nationwide coverage and support the growing EV fleet.
