National Standard Specifications and Dimensions of Cable Trays

Cable tray systems in the U. S. are primarily governed by the National Electrical Code (NEC), NEMA VE 1, and UL 568 standards, which define dimensions, load capacities, materials, and installation requirements.

Overview of Cable Tray Standards

Cable trays are used to support and protect electrical and communication cables while allowing ventilation and easy access for maintenance.

The NE

C (Article 392) specifies installation requirements, allowable ampacities, and spacing for different types of cable trays, including ladder, ventilated, solid-bottom, and wire mesh trays.

NEMA V

E 1 provides manufacturing and design requirements for metal cable trays, including load/span class designations, while UL 568 covers performance and safety requirements for nonmetallic (fiberglass) cable trays.

Types and Dimensions

Ladder Cable Tray: The usable interior width must accommodate the combined diameters of cables arranged in a single layer, ensuring proper support and heat dissipation. Solid Bottom Cable Tray: The total cable diameters should not exceed 90% of the tray width, with a 22% reduction in allowable cable area compared to ladder trays. Wire Mesh and Perforated Trays: Provide ventilation and flexibility for routing multiple cables, often used in data centers or industrial applications.

Rung spacing for ladder trays is typically 6 to 9 inches (150–230 mm) to maintain cable support and prevent sagging. Tray widths vary depending on the number and size of cables, with standard widths ranging from 4 inches to 36 inches or more, depending on application and load requirements.

Materials and Construction

Cable trays are manufactured from steel, stainless steel, aluminum, or fiberglass, with material selection based on environmental conditions, corrosion resistance, and mechanical strength. Aluminum and stainless steel offer high corrosion resistance, while fiberglass provides a lightweight, non-conductive alternative suitable for harsh environments.

Installation and Compliance

Load and Span Ratings: NEMA VE 1 specifies load/span classes to ensure trays can safely support the intended cable weight over a given span.

NE

C Compliance: Installation must follow NEC guidelines for spacing, grounding, and ampacity limits for cables rated 2000 volts or less. Maintenance and Modifications: Proper installation allows for easy expansion, reconfiguration, or maintenance without compromising safety. International and National ReferencesUL 568: Nonmetallic cable tray performance and safety.

IE

C 61537: International standard for cable tray systems, including metal and nonmetallic trays.

NFP

A 70 (NEC): Covers installation and ampacity requirements.

CS

A C22. 1 (Canada): Provides similar standards for Canadian installations. In summary, cable tray systems must comply with NEC, NEMA, and UL standards to ensure proper dimensions, load capacity, material suitability, and safe installation.

Designers and engineers should reference these standards when selecting tray types, widths, and materials to meet both safety and operational requirements.
