How to connect splice-free composite optical cables

Splice-free composite optical cables can be connected using field-installable connectors or mechanical splices, which allow reliable, fast, and non-permanent fiber connections.

Field-

Installable ConnectorsField-installable connectors, such as OptiTap® connectors, are designed for quick and reliable termination of optical fibers without fusion splicing. The process typically involves: Stripping and Cleaning: Remove the outer jacket, buffer, and protective coatings to expose the bare fiber. Clean the fiber thoroughly to remove dust or debris.

Cleaving: Use a precision cleaver to create a flat, smooth fiber end. Insertion and Activation: Insert the fiber into the connector, activate the cam mechanism, and secure the fiber. Many systems provide a go/no-go feedback signal to verify proper installation.

Crimping or Securing: Lock the connector in place to ensure mechanical stability and low insertion loss. These connectors are suitable for composite cables with multiple fibers and can handle both indoor and outdoor applications. They offer low insertion loss and fast deployment, making them ideal for emergency restoration or field installations (Corning Optical Communications).

Mechanical Splicing

Mechanical splices are another splice-free method. They work by aligning two cleaved fiber ends within a precision sleeve and using an index-matching gel to minimize signal loss. Key steps include: Fiber Preparation: Strip the fiber to expose the bare glass and clean it carefully.

Cleaving: Cut the fiber ends precisely to ensure smooth mating surfaces. Alignment and Insertion: Place the fibers into the mechanical splice holder, ensuring proper alignment. Securing: Close the splice holder to maintain fiber contact.

The index-matching gel reduces Fresnel reflections and insertion loss. Mechanical splices are cost-effective, require minimal equipment, and can be used for both single-mode and multimode fibers. While they may not outperform fusion splices, they often provide better performance than mated connector pairs in field conditions.

Best Practices

Use proper tools: Cleavers, fiber strippers, and cleaning kits are essential for reliable connections. Maintain hygiene: Even small dust particles can cause significant signal loss. Check compatibility: Ensure connectors match the fiber type (single-mode or multimode) and cable specifications.

Follow bend radius and pulling limits: Avoid physical stress that could damage fibers or degrade performance. By using field-installable connectors or mechanical splices, you can achieve splice-free, reliable connections for composite optical cables without the need for fusion splicing, while maintaining high optical performance.
