How to identify the appearance of optical cables

Optical cables, or fiber optic cables, are slender cables with colored outer jackets that encase thin glass or plastic fibers designed to transmit data as light signals.External Appearance

From the outside, optical cables often resemble traditional network cables but are generally slimmer and lighter. Indoor patch cables can be as thin as 1.6mm, while multi-strand outdoor cables may reach about 5mm in diameter . The outer jacket is typically made of durable materials like PVC, polyethylene, or low-smoke zero-halogen (LSZH) compounds, providing protection against environmental factors, abrasion, and physical stress . The jacket color often indicates the type of fiber: yellow for single-mode fibers, orange or black for multimode fibers, and gray or white for indoor tight-buffered cables .

Internal Structure

Inside the cable, the core is an ultra-thin strand of glass or plastic where light travels. Single-mode fibers have a core diameter of about 8–10 microns, while multimode fibers range from 50–62.5 microns . Surrounding the core is the cladding, which reflects light back into the core to maintain signal strength. A coating protects the fiber from damage, and strengthening fibers or materials like Kevlar provide mechanical support . Some cables also include additional layers, such as resin buffers or armored sheaths, especially for outdoor or harsh environments .

Types and Connectors

Optical cables come in several types:

  • Single-mode fibers: Smaller diameter, long-distance transmission, usually yellow jacket .
  • Multimode fibers: Larger diameter, shorter distances, typically orange or black jacket .
  • Tight-buffered cables: Thicker coating for indoor use, gray or white jacket .
  • Loose-tube cables: Thinner coating for outdoor use, black or brown jacket . They require specialized connectors such as LC, SC, ST, or MPO, depending on the application and density of connections .
Visual Cues

In data centers or telecommunications closets, optical cables are distinguishable by their slender profile, color-coded jackets, and gentle sweeping curves due to their minimum bend radius requirements . Unlike copper cables, they carry data as pulses of light through ultra-pure glass strands, enabling high-speed, long-distance communication .
