Relationship between cable tray specifications and models

Cable trays are modular systems designed to support and route electrical and data cables, available in various types, materials, finishes, and load capacities to meet industrial, commercial, and data center requirements.

Types of Cable Trays

Ladder Tray: Features side rails with rungs for cable support, ideal for heavy-duty applications and long cable runs. Provides excellent ventilation and strain relief. Example: Hubbell NEXTFRAME® Ladder Tray with 16-gauge steel tubing, available in gray or black finishes, mountable on floors, walls, ceilings, or racks.

Ventilated Tray: Has perforated or slotted bottoms to allow airflow, reducing heat buildup. Suitable for power and data cables in environments with moderate heat generation. Solid Bottom Tray: Provides full protection against dust, debris, and electromagnetic interference.

Often used in sensitive instrumentation or control applications. Wire Mesh Tray: Made of welded steel wire, lightweight and flexible, ideal for light-duty applications and complex routing. Channel Tray: Compact, used for short runs or aesthetic applications, available with solid or ventilated bottoms.

Materials and Finishes

Steel: Pre-galvanized or hot-dip galvanized for corrosion resistance. Hot-dip galvanization provides sacrificial protection against rust. Stainless Steel: AISI 316L grade, highly resistant to corrosion, suitable for harsh or chemical environments.

Aluminum: Lightweight, corrosion-resistant, and easily formable, ideal for indoor and outdoor applications.

Powder-

Coated or Painted Finishes: Available for aesthetic or additional protective purposes.

Load Ratings and Dimensions

Cable trays are rated by load class, which defines the maximum weight they can support over a specific span. Typical rung spacing for ladder trays is 6 to 9 inches (150–230 mm) to maintain cable support and proper bend radius. Widths and depths vary depending on application, with common widths ranging from 4 to 24 inches.

Deflection data is provided for continuous spans to ensure structural integrity.

Standards and Compliance

Compliant with NEMA, UL, and CE standards, ensuring safety, mechanical strength, and electrical performance. Third-party certifications may include UL, LCIE, IMQ, depending on the manufacturer and region.
