Wiring method for lightning protection device in distribution box

A surge protection device (SPD) should be installed as close as possible to the power supply entry, with phase, neutral, and earth wires connected correctly to ensure effective lightning and surge protection. Placement in the Distribution BoxSPDs are typically installed at the incoming panel of the distribution box, directly where the main power enters the system.

For Type I SP

Ds, which handle direct lightning strikes, installation is usually upstream or downstream of the electricity meter if the building has external lightning protection or overhead line feed.

Type II SP

Ds are installed in the main or sub-distribution board depending on the presence of external protection, while Type III SPDs are placed directly upstream of sensitive devices to limit voltage to safe levels (below 2. 5 kV).

Wiring Connections

Phase Wires (L1, L2, L3): Connect each phase terminal of the SPD to the corresponding phase line in the distribution box. Neutral Wire (N): Connect the SPD neutral terminal to the system neutral busbar. Earth Wire (PE): Connect the SPD earth terminal to the equipotential bonding rail or main earthing system.

The earth wire should be as short as possible with a large cross-section to minimize residual voltage and ensure effective surge dissipation.

For Type I SP

Ds, both earth terminals must be connected: one to the building's equipotential bonding and the other to the PE conductor of the installation. This ensures that high-energy surges are safely diverted to ground without causing voltage drops that could damage equipment. Integration with MCBs and RCCBsSPDs are often installed between the main circuit breaker (MCB) and the residual current circuit breaker (RCCB).

The incoming supply is connected to the MCB, and the SPD is wired in parallel to the protected circuits. This configuration allows the SPD to limit transient overvoltages while the MCB and RCCB provide standard overcurrent and leakage protection.

Safety and Standards

Only qualified electricians should install SPDs, following national and international standards such as IEC 62305. Ensure short, low-inductance connections to the earth to prevent voltage spikes. Use leakage current-free SPDs upstream of the electricity meter to avoid nuisance tripping.

Verify that the SPD's voltage rating matches the insulation coordination of the system to protect downstream equipment effectively. By following these wiring and installation practices, the SPD will provide effective protection against lightning-induced surges, safeguarding both the distribution system and connected devices.
