Cable trays and general process piping

Proper integration of cable trays and process piping requires careful spacing, structural support, and material considerations to ensure safety, functionality, and compliance with industrial standards.

Overview

Cable trays are designed to support and organize electrical cables, while process piping transports liquids, gases, or other materials in industrial systems. In complex facilities, these systems often share the same structural frameworks, such as pipe racks, which must be carefully designed to prevent interference, damage, or safety hazards.

Safety Distances and Placement

Maintaining adequate separation between cable trays and process piping is critical: Corrosive substances: Cable trays should not be installed below pipelines carrying corrosive liquids or above pipelines carrying corrosive gases. If unavoidable, a minimum distance of 500 mm is required, along with corrosion-resistant partitions or cover plates. Thermal pipelines: For pipelines with insulation, maintain at least 500 mm separation; without insulation, at least 1000 mm is recommended.

Cable trays should not be installed directly above thermal pipelines, and thermal insulation boards should be used at intersections. General spacing: Proper spacing prevents heat transfer, vibration, or chemical exposure from affecting cable performance, reducing the risk of electrical failures or fires.

Structural Support

Cable trays and process piping can share trapeze or multi-tier supports on pipe racks, with cable trays typically occupying upper tiers and piping on lower tiers. Key considerations include: Ensuring the support structure can handle combined loads of cables and pipes. Prefabricated multi-trade racks are often used to simplify installation and reduce on-site assembly.

Independent support may be required for certain critical cables or conduits, depending on specifications.

Materials and Durability

Cable trays are available in galvanized steel, stainless steel, aluminum, and coated varieties, providing corrosion resistance and long service life. Selection depends on environmental conditions, chemical exposure, and mechanical load requirements.

Installation Precautions

Cable trays should be coordinated with civil structures such as walls, beams, and columns. Deflection limits must be observed: typically 1/200 of the span, or 1/150 for spans ≥ 6000 mm. When passing through fireproof or explosion-proof areas, appropriate sealing devices must be installed.

Proper grounding and electrical continuity must be ensured using copper bridges or marked grounding holes.

Pipe Rack Considerations

Pipe racks serve as the backbone for both piping and cable trays, providing elevated support for maintenance access and efficient routing. Design factors include: Width, spacing, and elevation of tiers. Coordination with P&ID, plot plans, and client specifications.

Consideration of thermal expansion, vibration, and load distribution.

Summary

Integrating cable trays with process piping requires careful planning of spacing, structural support, and material selection. Adhering to recommended distances, using corrosion-resistant and insulated barriers, and coordinating with pipe rack design ensures safe, reliable, and maintainable installations in industrial environments.
