The internal material of optical cable is

The internal material of an optical cable primarily consists of a core made of ultra-pure silica glass or plastic, surrounded by cladding, protective coatings, and buffer layers.Core

The core is the central part of the optical fiber that carries light signals. It is usually made of ultra-pure silica glass (SiO₂), sometimes doped with germanium to control the refractive index for efficient light transmission, or in some cases, high-quality plastic for short-range applications . The core diameter varies depending on the fiber type: 8–10 microns for single-mode fibers and 50–62.5 microns for multimode fibers .

Cladding

Surrounding the core is the cladding, also made of glass but with a lower refractive index than the core. This difference enables total internal reflection, keeping light confined within the core and minimizing signal loss .

Coatings and Buffer Layers

The core and cladding are coated with dual-layer UV-cured acrylate or polyimide coatings. The primary soft coating protects the fiber from microbends and mechanical stress, while the secondary hard coating provides additional durability . Around the coated fiber, a buffer layer or resin tube is added to form the cable core, which protects the fiber from physical damage during handling and installation .

Strength Members and Outer Jacket

To enhance mechanical strength, optical cables include aramid fibers (e.g., Kevlar), steel wires, or fiberglass rods. These strength members prevent stretching and breakage. The entire assembly is enclosed in an outer jacket, made from materials like polyethylene, LSZH, PVC, or polyurethane, which protects against environmental hazards such as moisture, UV radiation, and physical impact .

Optional Features

Some optical cables include water-blocking gels or powders for outdoor use, and armoring for protection against rodents or mechanical damage. In specialized hollow-core fibers, light travels through air instead of solid glass, reducing latency and dispersion . In summary, the internal material of an optical cable is a carefully engineered combination of core, cladding, coatings, buffer layers, strength members, and protective jackets, designed to ensure efficient, high-speed, and reliable light transmission.
