How to identify port optical module parameters

Port optical module parameters include transmission power, reception power, temperature, voltage, and bias current, which collectively determine the module's operational status and alarm conditions.

Key Optical Module Parameters

Transmitting Optical Power (Tx Power): Indicates the power level at which the module sends optical signals. It is critical for ensuring proper signal strength to the receiving device and avoiding signal degradation or packet loss. Receiving Optical Power (Rx Power): Measures the power level of incoming optical signals.

This parameter is essential for monitoring the link quality and detecting under- or over-power conditions that may trigger alarms. Temperature: The module's internal temperature affects performance and reliability. Exceeding the specified temperature range can lead to module failure or degraded signal quality.

Power-

Supply Voltage (Vcc): Ensures the module receives stable voltage for proper operation. Voltage outside the acceptable range can cause malfunction or trigger alarms. Bias Current: The current applied to the laser diode within the module.

Abnormal bias current can indicate laser degradation or failure, affecting transmission quality.

Alarm and Threshold Configuration

Optical modules often support alarm thresholds for each parameter. When a parameter exceeds its configured limits, the system generates an alarm to alert network operators. For example, GPON modules allow configuration of upper and lower thresholds for Tx/Rx power, temperature, voltage, and bias current.

This enables proactive monitoring and maintenance to prevent service disruption. Standards and Module TypesEPON Modules: Defined by IEEE 802. 3ah, supporting 1.

25G upstream and downstream rates. Classes PX10 and PX20 specify different transmission and reception characteristics. 10GEPON Modules: IEEE 802.

3av standard, supporting symmetrical 10G rates with PR10, PR20, and PR30 grades for improved sensitivity and saturation ranges.

GPO

N Modules: ITU-T G. 984 standard, supporting 1. 25G upstream and 2.

5G downstream. Classes B+ and C+ define performance parameters. XG-PON/XGS-PON Modules: ITU-T G.

987 standard, supporting asymmetric 2. 5G/10G or symmetrical 10G rates, with consistent parameters for flexible deployment.

Monitoring and Diagnostics

Modern switches and OLTs provide Digital Diagnostic Monitoring (DDM) or DOM to read real-time values of optical module parameters. This includes Tx/Rx power, temperature, voltage, and bias current, along with alarm status. A normal status indicates all parameters are within valid ranges.

Network operators can query these parameters per port to ensure proper operation and compatibility between modules and devices.

Practical Considerations

Always verify module identification and coding compatibility with the switch or OLT to avoid unsupported configurations. Configure alarm thresholds according to network design and module specifications to prevent false alarms while ensuring early detection of potential issues.

For PO

N networks, consider the differences between OLT and ONU modules in transmission power, reception sensitivity, and overload optical power when planning deployments. By monitoring and configuring these parameters, network operators can maintain high reliability, service quality, and efficient troubleshooting in optical access networks.
