Only one fiber optic interface optical module

A single-fiber optical module, also called a BiDi transceiver, enables bidirectional data transmission over a single optical fiber using two different wavelengths.

Overview

A single-fiber or BiDi (bidirectional) optical module is a type of optical transceiver that allows data to be transmitted and received simultaneously over a single strand of fiber. Unlike traditional dual-fiber modules, which require one fiber for transmitting (TX) and another for receiving (RX), BiDi modules use Wavelength Division Multiplexing (WDM) to separate the signals by wavelength, enabling full-duplex communication on a single fiber strand.

How It Works

Transmission and Reception: The module sends light at one wavelength (e.g., 1310 nm) and receives light at a different wavelength (e.g., 1550 nm) from the paired module at the other end.

WD

M Coupler: An internal WDM filter separates the two wavelengths, allowing the transceiver to process incoming and outgoing signals independently. Pairing Requirement: BiDi modules must be used in matched pairs with complementary wavelengths (e.g., TX1310/RX1550 paired with TX1550/RX1310) to ensure proper communication.

Advantages

Fiber Savings: Reduces fiber usage by 50%, which is beneficial in environments with limited fiber availability. Cost Efficiency: Fewer fibers mean lower material and installation costs, and reduced maintenance complexity. Simplified Deployment: Fewer physical connections lead to faster network deployment and fewer potential failure points.

Flexibility: Can be used in both single-mode and multi-mode fiber networks depending on distance and speed requirements.

Typical Applications

Campus Networks: Reduces fiber consumption in large-scale networks. Data Center Interconnects: Simplifies cabling while maintaining high-speed links. Metro Rings: Efficiently upgrades existing fiber infrastructure without laying new cables.

Considerations

Cost: BiDi modules are generally more expensive per unit than dual-fiber modules. Compatibility: Must ensure wavelength matching between paired modules to avoid connection failure. Distance and Speed: Single-mode BiDi modules are suitable for long distances and high-speed links, while multi-mode BiDi modules are better for shorter distances.

In summary, single-fiber BiDi optical modules are an effective solution for networks that need to maximize fiber efficiency, reduce costs, and simplify installation, while still supporting high-speed, full-duplex communication.
