Single-core composite optical cable

Single-core composite optical cables are typically single-mode fibers designed for long-distance, high-bandwidth applications, available in tight-buffered or loose-tube constructions for indoor, outdoor, and industrial environments. OverviewSingle-core composite optical cables consist of a single optical fiber core surrounded by cladding, protective coatings, and an outer jacket. These cables transmit data as light signals, offering minimal signal loss and high-speed communication over long distances.

The core size is usually 8–9 µm for single-mode fibers, allowing light to travel in a single path, which reduces reflection and enables longer transmission distances compared to multimode fibers (used for shorter distances). Cable ConstructionsTight-Buffered Cables (OS1): The fiber is coated with a protective buffer, making the cable flexible, crush-resistant, and easier to handle. Ideal for indoor applications, such as LANs, office buildings, and moderate-distance telco loops.

OS1 cables can support speeds up to 10G and distances up to approximately 10 km.

Loose-

Tube or Blown Cables (OS2): The fiber floats within a rugged, oversized tube, often filled with gel for moisture protection. These are suited for outdoor, long-distance applications, including direct burial, aerial installations, and backbone networks. OS2 cables can support speeds up to 100G and distances up to 200 km.

Composite FeaturesSingle-core composite cables may include additional layers or features for enhanced performance: Armored or ruggedized jackets for industrial or harsh environments. Plenum or riser-rated jackets for fire safety in building installations. Dry or gel-filled designs to prevent moisture ingress in outdoor or underground deployments.

Color-coded buffer coatings for easy identification in multi-cable installations.
