Color of optical fiber core

Optical fiber cores are color-coded using a standardized 12-color sequence to ensure easy identification, with additional markings for cables containing more than 12 fibers.Standard 12-Color Sequence

The most widely adopted standard for fiber core colors is defined by TIA-598-C and similar international standards. The sequence for the first 12 fibers is: Blue, Orange, Green, Brown, Gray, White, Red, Black, Yellow, Purple, Pink, Aqua (Cyan) . This sequence is applied consistently to individual fibers within a cable, as well as to loose tubes in multi-core cables, ensuring technicians can quickly identify fibers during installation, splicing, or maintenance .

High-Fiber-Count Cables

For cables with more than 12 fibers, the color sequence repeats, but additional markers such as black stripes or dots are added to distinguish fibers in subsequent groups. For example:

  • In a 24-fiber cable, fibers 13–24 follow the same 12-color sequence, with black stripes added to differentiate them from fibers 1–12 .
  • In multi-tube systems, the outer tube may have a color from the 12-color sequence, and the fibers inside the tube follow the same sequence, allowing identification of fibers like Fiber #34 as the 10th fiber in the 3rd tube (Violet fiber in a Green tube), . Some European or high-density ribbon cables may use a 16-color sequence for specific applications, including Olive, Magenta, Tan, and Lime for fibers 13–16 .
Practical Applications
  • Patch cords, PLC splitters, and ribbon fibers follow the same color coding to maintain consistency across network components .
  • Outdoor multi-core cables often use loose tubes with filler ropes arranged near the red tube, and single-tube cables are typically green unless specified otherwise .
  • International standards like IEC 60793-1-41 complement TIA-598-C, providing alternative color assignments in some regions .
Summary

The color spectrum of optical fiber cores is a critical identification system that ensures accurate installation, reduces errors, and maintains global consistency. The 12-color sequence is the foundation, with additional markers for high-fiber-count cables, and variations exist for specific standards or high-density applications .
