Pump Station Cable Tray Laying

Proper cable tray installation in pump stations ensures safe, organized, and expandable routing of power and control cables while accommodating heavy loads and heat dissipation.

Planning and Preparation

Before installation, review approved shop drawings to determine tray routes, lengths, and locations, ensuring horizontal and vertical runs avoid clashes with other services and allow future maintenance access. Inspect all materials upon delivery to confirm compliance with approved submittals, checking for damage, corrosion, or deformities, and store them in a dry, covered area on flat timber supports. Ensure tools and equipment meet contract requirements and that the work area is clean and safe for installation.

Tray Selection and Design

For pump stations, ladder-type cable trays are preferred for heavy armored cables, such as those from Variable Frequency Drives (VFDs), because they allow air circulation to prevent overheating. Avoid solid-bottom trays unless electrical noise shielding is required, as they trap heat. Design trays to carry the current load plus 25% extra for future expansion, and select trays according to NEMA load classes to ensure structural integrity over long spans.

Installation Procedure

Marking and Layout: Mark tray routes on walls or ceilings according to shop drawings, maintaining proper clearances for cable pulling and maintenance. Supports and Fixings: Install strong supports, brackets, and hangers at recommended intervals to prevent sagging, especially around bends, elbows, and tees. Routing Cables: Avoid excessive bending of thick power cables to prevent copper breakage.

Ensure cables pass around tanks, walls, and lead to control panels without strain. Assembly: Connect trays, ladders, and fittings securely, following manufacturer recommendations and project specifications. Inspection and QA/QC: Supervisors should monitor installation, verify compliance with method statements, and ensure operatives are trained and competent.

Safety Considerations

Conduct a site safety induction for all personnel. Follow manufacturer's handling guidelines for heavy trays and cables. Correct any unsafe conditions before proceeding with installation.

Ensure proper grounding and bonding of trays to prevent electrical hazards. Post-InstallationAfter laying the trays, perform a final inspection to confirm alignment, support integrity, and compliance with approved drawings. Document inspections and testing records as part of the Inspection & Test Plan (ITP) for quality assurance.

By following these steps, pump station cable tray systems will be safe, durable, and capable of accommodating current and future electrical loads.
