How to coil fiber after melting

Properly melting fiber onto a coil involves precise fusion splicing, controlled heating, and careful coiling to protect the fiber and minimize signal loss.

Preparation and Tools

Before starting, ensure you have the right tools and a clean workspace: Fiber strippers to remove the outer coating without damaging the glass coreHigh-precision cleaver to create a perfect 90-degree end faceLint-free wipes and 99% isopropyl alcohol for cleaning the fiberFusion splicer with clean electrodes, V-groove, and objective lensHeat-shrink splice protection sleeves to protect the joint after fusion Fusion Splicing ProcessClean and cleave the fiber ends: Remove any debris or oils until the fiber “squeaks” when wiped. Ensure the ends are flat and perpendicular to the fiber axis. Set fusion parameters: Adjust the splicer's pre-melting current, main melting current, and time according to the fiber type and material.

Align fibers in the splicer: Place the fibers in the V-groove, ensuring proper alignment. Observe for bubbles, uneven melting, or separation during the fusion process. Fuse the fibers: Activate the electric arc to melt the fiber ends together, forming a continuous optical path.

Apply protective sleeve: Slide a heat-shrink sleeve over the splice and place it in the splicer's heating zone. Heat until the sleeve shrinks and forms a rigid, waterproof shield.

Coiling and Handling

Coil the fiber carefully: Route internal pigtails counterclockwise and external fibers clockwise along the splice tray slots. Avoid pulling or forcing the fiber; follow its natural curve. Maintain proper bending radius: Keep the bend radius at least ten times the fiber diameter and no less than 30 mm to prevent breakage.

Secure excess fiber: Use adhesive cable tie seats to fix redundant fiber without overtightening, especially at cable entrances.

Tips for Success

Always work in a clean, well-lit area to avoid contamination. Replace aging electrodes in the splicer to ensure consistent fusion quality. Allow the fiber to cool in a tray after heating to prevent burns or stress on the splice.

By following these steps, you can achieve a strong, low-loss fiber connection and safely coil the fiber for long-term reliability.
