Installation of 800G Active Optical Cable

800G Active Optical Cables (AOCs) require careful handling, proper OSFP module alignment, and configuration of application settings to ensure optimal high-speed data transmission.

Overview800

G AO

Cs are designed for high-speed interconnects in data centers, supporting up to 800 Gbps aggregate bandwidth using 8 lanes of 100G PAM4 modulation. They are available in OSFP form factors and can reach distances up to 50–100 meters depending on fiber type (OM3 or OM4) and vendor specifications. Each cable includes DSP-based equalization, PAM4 retimers, and channel loss compensation to maintain signal integrity over high-speed links.

Pre-

Installation Considerations

Host Compatibility: Ensure the host system supports OSFP 800G modules and provides the required 3. 3V pull-up resistors for serial clock and data signals. Application Configuration: Both ends of the AOC must be set to the same application.

This can be done via CMIS-compliant AppSel registers or vendor-specific methods. Environmental Handling: Avoid excessive bending or stress on the cable. Active optical cables are sensitive to mechanical strain and require careful routing in racks.

Installation Steps

Inspect the Cable and Connectors: Verify that the OSFP connectors are clean and free of dust or debris.

Align the OSF

P Module: Follow the plug sequence specified by the manufacturer (typically 1 → 2 → 3) to ensure proper mating with the host connector. Insert the Module: Gently insert the OSFP module into the host port until it clicks into place. Avoid forcing the connector.

Configure Application Settings: Read the Application Descriptor Registers. Select the required AppSel value in the Active Control Set. Write the configuration to DPConfigLane registers.

Trigger application instantiation by writing to the ApplyDPInitLane register. Verify Link Status: Check module presence, link integrity, and error counters via host management tools. Ensure TX/RX auto-equalization is enabled for optimal performance.

Post-InstallationMonitor signal quality and lane equalization to detect any degradation. Ensure breakout modes (e.g., 1x800G or 2x400G) are correctly configured if using multi-port setups. Maintain proper airflow and avoid tight bends to prevent thermal or mechanical stress.

Key Tips

Use OM3 or OM4 fiber according to distance requirements. Follow vendor-specific datasheets for DSP and PAM4 retimer settings. Avoid mixing different application configurations on each end of the cable to prevent link failure.

By following these steps and adhering to manufacturer guidelines, 800G AOCs can be installed safely and provide reliable high-speed connectivity in modern data center environments.
