Installation of underground conduits for cable trays in the computer room

Proper underground or underfloor cable tray installation ensures safe, organized, and scalable routing of power and data cables while maintaining airflow and compliance with standards.

Planning and Design

Before installation, review approved shop drawings to determine tray layout, lengths, and locations. Consider the following: Raised floor integration: Install trays either before or after the raised floor, depending on accessibility needs. Installing prior to the floor can reduce labor and project time.

Tray type and material: Use metallic trays bonded to the data center grounding infrastructure, ensuring UL-approved components. Separation of cabling: Fiber and copper cables should be separated by solid barriers to prevent damage and interference. Airflow considerations: Maintain clear pathways to preserve underfloor airflow, which is critical for cooling efficiency.

Installation Practices

Support system: Use independent supports rather than attaching trays directly to the raised floor to avoid unnecessary load and strain. Tray lengths: Choose tray sections based on obstructions; 2' sections for congested areas, 4' or 10' sections where space allows to reduce supports and material costs. Mounting: Secure trays using C-channels, bolts, and load-bearing cleats as per specifications.

Ensure vertical and horizontal alignment. Joints and bends: Provide support within 300mm of joints, tees, elbows, and reducers. Maintain minimum permissible cable bend radius.

Grounding: Install earth continuity strips at all joints and connect a separate grounding cable to the earth bar.

Material Handling and Safety

Inspect all materials for damage and compliance with approved submittals before installation. Store trays horizontally on flat surfaces with timber supports to prevent warping or moisture damage. Remove burs and sharp edges, and apply galvanized paint to cut edges to prevent rusting.

Ensure all personnel are trained and competent, with safety inductions completed.

Compliance and Standards

Follow NE

C, ANSI/TIA-569-B, and ANSI/TIA/EIA 942 for cable tray design, grounding, and separation requirements. Use plenum-rated cables (CMP) in underfloor spaces to meet fire safety and performance standards. Ensure trays are sized to accommodate future expansion and allow easy access for maintenance.

Summary

A well-planned underground cable tray system in a computer room provides organized, safe, and scalable cable management, preserves airflow, and ensures compliance with electrical and fire safety standards. Proper support, grounding, cable separation, and material handling are essential for long-term reliability and maintainability of the data center infrastructure.
