Existing fiber optic sensors can be divided into

Fiber optic sensors are primarily divided into intrinsic, extrinsic, and hybrid types based on their sensing mechanism.Main Types of Fiber Optic Sensors

1. Intrinsic Fiber Optic Sensors In intrinsic sensors, the fiber itself acts as the sensing element. The measurand (quantity being measured) directly affects the light traveling through the fiber, causing changes in intensity, phase, polarization, or wavelength. The light remains within the fiber throughout the sensing process. These sensors are highly sensitive and suitable for measuring strain, temperature, pressure, or other environmental parameters directly within the fiber structure . 2. Extrinsic Fiber Optic Sensors Extrinsic sensors use the fiber primarily as a light guide. The actual sensing occurs outside the fiber via an external transducer. The fiber transmits light to and from the sensing element, which modulates the light based on the measurand. This type is ideal for remote sensing applications, such as measuring temperature inside jet engines or electrical transformers, where direct access is difficult or hazardous . 3. Hybrid Fiber Optic Sensors Hybrid sensors combine features of both intrinsic and extrinsic types. The fiber carries light into and out of the sensing device, while part of the sensing may occur within the fiber itself. This approach allows for enhanced flexibility and sensitivity in complex measurement scenarios .

Operational Categories

Fiber optic sensors can also be classified based on their optical configuration:

  • Through-beam sensors: Comprise a separate transmitter and receiver. The target interrupts the light beam, and detection occurs when the beam is blocked.
  • Reflective sensors: Contain a single unit where the light is reflected back from the target. Reflective types include parallel, coaxial, and separate configurations, depending on the fiber arrangement and cross-section .
Summary

Fiber optic sensors are versatile and can be categorized by sensing mechanism (intrinsic, extrinsic, hybrid) or optical configuration (through-beam, reflective). Each type offers unique advantages for applications in structural health monitoring, industrial automation, aerospace, and remote sensing, providing high sensitivity, immunity to electromagnetic interference, and the ability to operate in harsh environments .
