Fiber Optic Cable Coiling Techniques

Fiber optic cable coiling requires careful handling to prevent bending damage, ensure signal integrity, and maintain organized layouts, whether in splice closures, automated winding, or undersea deployment.

Practical Coiling After Splicing

After splicing, optical fibers must be coiled carefully to avoid sharp bends that can break the fiber or cause signal loss. Key steps include pre-processing the cable and pigtail, calculating reserved lengths, and coiling fibers in a tidy, organized manner. Common methods include: Middle-first then sides: Place heat-shrunk sleeves in the fixing groove first, then coil remaining fibers on both sides.

This protects fiber joints and prevents damage. End-to-end coiling: Start coiling from one end, fix the heat shrink tube, and then coil the remaining fiber on the other side. This method is flexible and avoids sharp bends.

Special handling: For fibers that are unusually long, short, or connected to special devices, coil them separately with buffer pads to prevent extrusion damage. Graphic fiber discs: Use natural coiling patterns according to the reserved space, avoiding excessive tension or pulling. These methods ensure low additional loss, mechanical stability, and easier future maintenance.

Automated and High-

Precision Coiling

Modern coiling systems, such as high-precision automatic winding tools, maintain balanced tension, consistent feed speed, and smooth direction transitions. They produce uniform coils with engineered dimensions (e.g., 200mm inner diameter, 500mm outer diameter, 270–320mm width) to optimize packing density while protecting the fiber's optical and mechanical properties. TTL-level signal inputs allow synchronization with automated production lines, making these systems suitable for factory-scale operations.

Undersea and Large-

Scale Deployment

For undersea cables, coiling patterns are influenced by the deployment speed of the vessel relative to the cable spool. If the boat moves slower than the cable payout, loops and coils form, which can lead to signal attenuation. Conversely, if the boat moves too fast, the cable may become taut and risk fracture.

Laboratory simulations using scaled-down setups and computer modeling help predict coiling patterns, enabling engineers to design deployment strategies that minimize tangling and mechanical stress.

Specialized Coiling for Sensors

In applications like fiber-optic gyroscopes, symmetrical winding around a shaft is used to reduce thermally-induced non-reciprocities. The coil may be glued or potted to maintain mechanical and thermal stability, ensuring precise phase measurements. This method involves careful layering, spacing between turns, and controlled overlap to maintain sensor accuracy.

Best Practices

Always respect the minimum bend radius to prevent fiber breakage. Coil fibers symmetrically and evenly to avoid stress points. Use buffer pads or protective sleeves when coiling near other fibers or devices.

Maintain tidy, organized layouts for easier maintenance and inspection. For automated systems, ensure tension and feed speed are calibrated to prevent loops or tangles. By following these methods, fiber optic cables can be coiled safely and efficiently, whether for field installations, factory production, or precision sensor applications.
