Fiber Fiber Tray Steps

Fiber splice trays organize, protect, and secure optical fibers for splicing, ensuring minimal signal loss and long-term network reliability.Overview

A fiber splice tray is a compartmentalized tray used inside fiber enclosures to neatly arrange and protect spliced fibers. It accommodates different fiber types (250 µm, 900 µm, ribbon fibers) and maintains a minimum bend radius to prevent signal degradation ( ).

Step-by-Step Fiber Tray Installation and Splicing
  1. Prepare the Fiber Cables
    • Strip the outer jacket and buffer tubes to expose the fibers.
    • Cut fibers to the appropriate length, typically leaving 6 inches (15.2 cm) or less from the tray end ( ).
    • Clean fibers with isopropyl alcohol to remove debris.
  2. Position the Tray
    • Mount the tray inside the fiber enclosure using screws or adhesive fasteners.
    • Ensure the tray is level and securely fixed to prevent movement ( ).
  3. Route the Fibers
    • Place fibers along the tray channels, following the molded routing paths.
    • Maintain the minimum bend radius (usually 3 inches or 76.2 mm) to avoid microbends or signal loss ( ).
    • Use cable ties or vinyl tape to secure fibers loosely; avoid over-tightening.
  4. Splice the Fibers
    • For mechanical splicing, align fibers in the mechanical splice holder and secure them.
    • For fusion splicing, use a fusion splicer to weld fiber ends together, then place the splice in the tray's splice holder.
    • Ensure each splice is properly labeled for identification.
  5. Organize Excess Fiber
    • Wrap excess fiber around the tray in the direction indicated by the molded arrows.
    • Make at least one complete loop to prevent stress on the splice.
    • Keep fibers evenly distributed to avoid overlapping or tangling ( ).
  6. Cover and Protect
    • Place the tray cover over the spliced fibers.
    • Ensure the cover is clear or labeled for easy identification of splices.
    • Verify that all fibers remain within the tray channels and are not pinched.
  7. Final Checks
    • Confirm that all splices are secure and properly labeled.
    • Check that the bend radius is maintained throughout the tray.
    • Close the fiber enclosure and ensure it is sealed against dust and moisture.
Best Practices
  • Always handle fibers with care to avoid breakage or contamination.
  • Avoid sharp bends and excessive tension on fibers.
  • Label each fiber and splice for easier maintenance and troubleshooting.
  • Use trays that match the fiber type and splice count requirements ( ). Following these steps ensures organized, protected, and low-loss fiber connections, which are critical for reliable network performance.
