Gigabit Passive Optical Networking Equipment

GPON equipment enables high-speed fiber-optic broadband by connecting a central Optical Line Terminal (OLT) to multiple end-user Optical Network Terminals (ONTs) via passive splitters, delivering up to 2. 5 Gbps downstream and 1. 25 Gbps upstream.

Core Components of GPON

Optical Line Terminal (OLT): Located at the service provider's central office, the OLT aggregates data from multiple ONTs and converts optical signals into Ethernet packets for Layer 2 or Layer 3 forwarding. It coordinates upstream transmissions using Time Division Multiple Access (TDMA) to prevent collisions and manages bandwidth allocation dynamically.

Optical Network Terminals/

Units (ONTs/ONUs): These devices are installed at the customer premises.

ON

Ts convert optical signals to electrical signals for end-user devices and provide encryption to secure downstream traffic.

ON

Us may serve multiple users in some contexts, while ONTs are typically single-customer devices. Passive Splitters: Passive optical splitters distribute a single fiber from the OLT to multiple ONTs without requiring power. Common split ratios are 1: 32 or 1: 64, allowing cost-efficient sharing of fiber infrastructure.

Optical Distribution Network (ODN): The ODN consists of optical fibers and passive components that connect the OLT to ONTs. It supports point-to-multipoint architecture and uses Wavelength-Division Multiplexing (WDM) to transmit upstream (1310 nm) and downstream (1490 nm) signals over the same fiber. Performance and StandardsGPON follows the ITU-T G.

984 standard, providing 2. 488 Gbps downstream and 1. 244 Gbps upstream.

The GPO

N Encapsulation Method (GEM) efficiently packages user traffic with frame segmentation.

GPO

N supports distances up to 60 km and point-to-multipoint multicast transmission. ApplicationsGPON is widely deployed for Fiber to the Home (FTTH), business networks, IPTV, VoIP, and smart-city infrastructure. Its passive architecture reduces energy consumption by up to 95% compared to copper networks and lowers maintenance costs.

It is suitable for high-bandwidth applications like streaming, cloud services, and multiple connected devices in homes and offices.

Evolution and Upgrades

While GPO

N remains the baseline for cost-efficient broadband, XGS-PON (10 Gbps symmetric) and emerging 25G/50G PON technologies offer higher upstream capacity to meet modern demands such as Wi-Fi 6/7 aggregation and multi-user video calls. Operators often deploy selective overlays of XGS-PON to upgrade capacity without replacing the entire GPON infrastructure. SummaryGPON equipment—comprising OLTs, ONTs/ONUs, passive splitters, and the ODN—provides a scalable, energy-efficient, and high-speed fiber-optic network.

It remains the dominant technology for residential and business broadband, with evolutionary paths toward XGS-PON and beyond to meet growing bandwidth requirements.

For TDM-PON, a passive optical splitter is used in the optical distribution network. In the upstream direction, each ONU (optical network units) or ONT (optical network terminal) burst transmits for an assigned time-slot (multiplexed in the time domain). In this way, the OLT is receiving signals from only one ONU or ONT at any point in time. In the downstream direction, the OLT (usually) continuously transmits (or may burst transmit). ONUs or ONTs see their own data through the address labels embe
