Voltage Ratings of Laser Diodes

Laser diodes require precise voltage control, with forward voltages typically ranging from 1. 8V to 8V depending on wavelength, and extremely low tolerance for reverse voltage, often as low as 2V.

Forward Voltage

The forward voltage of a laser diode is the voltage required to drive current through the p–n junction to produce light. It varies by wavelength and diode type: Infrared diodes: ~1. 8VRed diodes: ~2.

5VBlue, violet, and UV diodes: ~5VGreen diodes: 5. 5V to 8V, with some frequency-doubled types slightly higher. Forward voltage increases slightly with current and decreases with rising temperature.

It is important to operate the diode above its threshold current but below its maximum rated current to avoid damage.

Reverse Voltage

Laser diodes are extremely sensitive to reverse voltage, which can permanently damage the device. Even a reverse voltage as low as 2V can destroy a diode. Driver circuits must ensure that no reverse voltage is applied under any circumstances, and electrostatic discharge (ESD) precautions are critical during handling.

Driver Circuit Considerations

Laser diodes should be driven with constant current sources rather than constant voltage, because the forward voltage can vary with temperature and aging. A proper driver circuit must: Limit current to prevent exceeding the diode's maximum ratingCompensate for temperature variations to maintain stable light outputInclude ESD protection to prevent damage from static electricity The L/I curve (light output vs. current) is essential for determining the correct operating current for a desired optical power, and forward voltage is typically monitored to ensure safe operation.

Practical Tips

Always consult the laser diode datasheet for exact voltage and current specifications. Use temperature control if precise optical output is required, as voltage and light output are temperature-dependent. Avoid applying constant voltage directly; instead, regulate current to maintain safe and consistent operation.

By carefully managing forward and reverse voltages, along with current and temperature, laser diodes can operate safely and efficiently across their intended wavelength and power ranges.
