Digital Fiber Optic Sensor Description

Digital fiber optic sensors detect objects or measure physical quantities by transmitting light through optical fibers and converting the received signal into digital output for precise, reliable sensing.Overview

A digital fiber optic sensor consists of a sensor head and a digital amplifier. The sensor head transmits light from an LED or laser through an optical fiber to a target and receives the reflected or interrupted light. The amplifier processes this signal, converting it into a digital output that can be easily integrated with automation systems, PLCs, or monitoring devices (KEYENCE, Omron, Panasonic) .

Working Principle

Digital fiber optic sensors operate by modulating light properties such as intensity, phase, wavelength, or polarization. When the light interacts with a target, changes in these properties are detected by the sensor head and transmitted to the amplifier. The amplifier then interprets these changes and outputs a digital signal, indicating the presence, absence, or measurement of the target (RF Wireless World) .

Types of Digital Fiber Optic Sensors
  1. Thru-beam sensors: Light travels directly from the emitter to the receiver; ideal for detecting objects with indefinite shapes or positions .
  2. Reflective sensors: Light reflects off the target back to the sensor; suitable for detecting transparent or small objects .
  3. Retro-reflective sensors: Light reflects off a reflector and returns to the sensor; effective for long-distance detection and precise alignment .
  4. Miniature and square-head sensors: Designed for tight spaces or flat surfaces, offering high accuracy and easy installation .
Advantages
  • High precision and reliability: Can detect minute objects and small height differences (
