Optical cable loss parameters

Optical cable loss, or attenuation, is typically measured in decibels (dB) and depends on fiber type, wavelength, and components like connectors and splices.Understanding Optical Cable Loss

Optical cable loss, also called attenuation, is the reduction in optical signal power as light travels through a fiber optic link. It is expressed in decibels (dB) and accumulates across all elements of the optical path, including the fiber itself, connectors, splices, and any passive components like splitters in PON networks . Loss directly affects the power budget and the reliability of the optical link .

Typical Loss Values

Fiber attenuation varies by fiber type and wavelength:

  • Multimode fiber:
    • 850 nm: ~3 dB/km
    • 1300 nm: ~1 dB/km
    • Roughly 0.1 dB per 30 m at 850 nm and 0.1 dB per 100 m at 1300 nm
  • Single-mode fiber:
    • 1310 nm: ~0.5 dB/km
    • 1550 nm: ~0.4 dB/km
    • Roughly 0.1 dB per 200 m at 1310 nm and 0.1 dB per 250 m at 1550 nm Connector and splice losses:
  • Connectors: 0.3–0.75 dB per connection, depending on type (adhesive/polish, mechanical, MPO)
  • Splices: 0.15 dB for single-mode fusion splices, 0.3 dB for multimode mechanical splices
Loss Budget

A loss budget is the total allowable loss for a fiber link, calculated by summing the expected losses of all components. It ensures the received optical power remains above the minimum required for proper operation . For example, a 1,500-meter multimode link with two splices and connectors at each end may have a maximum insertion loss of 6.10 dB at 850 nm and 3.85 dB at 1300 nm .

Measurement Methods

Optical loss is measured using:

  • Optical power meters and light sources (OLTS): Measures insertion loss directly
  • OTDR (Optical Time-Domain Reflectometer): Measures loss along the fiber length, useful for locating faults, though with higher measurement uncertainty Loss is always measured in dB, while absolute optical power is measured in dBm. The difference between input and output power gives the relative loss .
Key Considerations
  • Loss depends on fiber type, wavelength, and installation quality
  • Excessive loss can degrade network performance or prevent proper signal reception
  • Standards like TIA-568.3-E provide guidelines for acceptable loss limits for different fiber types and applications By understanding these values and calculating a proper loss budget, installers and engineers can ensure reliable fiber optic network performance.
